David shares pictures of his unique Jenny Wiley Dulcimer created from an “ACKit” (Almost Complete Kit - 85% Complete) I wanted to build a gift for a friend who is partial to ducks. I researched the internet for plans to build a dulcimer and chose Jeff's kits for my first attempt. I build cabnets and furniture as a hobby and thought a musical instrument would be fun. My major consern was the fret board and getting the fret spacing perfect. Jeff's kit has the fretboard cut and frets installed. All components are solid wood, no plywood or particle board. The tuners and strings are quality too. To personalize the sound board, I cut "landing ducks" and "duck heads" with my scroll saw. I wanted the peg head to be in the shape of a duck head also, so when I ordered my kit, I asked Jeff to allow some extra material from his regular peg head and sent a pattern outline. This gave me the freedom to be creative and carve the duck's head. I have lots of clamps, so chose to clamp the glued pieces rather than using weights as Jeff does. After glueing the sides and ends together to make the "box", I traced it onto the back board and sound board. I then used my band saw and cut out the shape 1/4 inch larger. After final glue-up, I used a small block plane to trim to size. Four coats of tongue oil with steel wool in between, finished with paste wax. The walnut and poplar woods I received were of top quality and compliment each other very well. I will be ordering another kit just as soon as my wife decides what shape to cut the peg head. |
