Have you completed a Jenny Wiley Dulcimer Kit? Would you like to place a picture and a few words of encouragement for others on this web site? |

David mailed me these kind words!
Jeff, I finally got a couple of pictures of the dulcimer that I built form the “Scratch” kit. I have some comments about it:
1.- The directions you supplies were very complete. I didn’t have problems trying to interpret steps involved in the building.
2.- I had read some info. on dulcimer building from other sources. As a result, I added a “liner” between sides and top/bottom. A strip about 1/4 inch thick. I glued it and clamped it with clothespins every inch or two. Also, maybe I should not have done this, but I removed the center of the cross brace - connected the end holes and left an oval for more sound transmission within the box. I thing the construction is strong enough with the liner.
3.- The sound of the dulcimer is excellent compared to other dulcimers I have heard. The teardrop has a clear, ringing sound (seems somewhat brighter than the hourglass shape).
4.- I agree with you that the most important aspect of building is taking your time. This is especially true in the sanding phase.
5.- One other thing I found. Since I have a woodworking shop I have enough clamps to clamp the sides to the top and bottom. I think I would prefer to clam rather that using weights.
At any rate, you did a great job putting the kit together. Also, putting labels on the parts will help the first-time builder.
